Rainy Day Market

The rains fell on Greenville’s Farmers Market Saturday but that did not keep people away from some very good deals on produce and baked goods. Mike with M&B Farm out of Poetry, Texas told the story of how Poetry, Texas got its name to the shoppers that stopped by his stand.

M&B Farm is as far south as you can go in Hunt County before crossing the Kaufman County line about seventy-five feet south. Poetry was a stage coach stop on the Jefferson-Dallas Trail. It quickly grew to a few hundred residents after getting a post office in 1876. The population peaked in 1905.  World War I saw many men leave and never return. The buildings burned in the early thirties. Today the former location of the hamlet can be found straddling the Hunt, Kaufman, and Rockwall Counties at the intersection of FM 1565 and 986.
