Hunt County will observe Peace Officers Memorial Day at 10 AM on Saturday, May 19th. The observance coincides with Armed Forces Day.
Officer Rogelio Santander who died last week in the line of duty will be honored as well as County Detention Officer Attaway killed in a vehicle crash last February. Eleven other officers have died in the city and county over the past century. Although these two officers will be remembered they will not be added to the Hunt County Peace Officers Memorial. Neither of these two officers were from the county according to Sgt. Jeff Haines.
The Greenville event is being conducted in conjunction with National Police Week. The program will feature tributes to those Texas officers that died during the last twelve months. A memorial wreath will be presented and the symbolic riderless horse from the Sherriff’s Posse will be present. A pair of boots will be reversed in the stirrups. The honor guard will fire a 21-gun salute. The ceremony will conclude with the traditional playing of Taps.
