Dr. Margo Harbison, who spent 11 seasons as the Director of Athletics and 24 total years in Texas A&M University-Commerce Lion Athletics, passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2015.
Harbison started at then East Texas State in 1974 as the school’s Coordinator of Women’s Athletics before moving into an Associate Athletic Director role in 9185. She received her promotions to Director of Athletics in 1988 and held that seat until retiring on July 8, 1999.
During her time at the helm of Lions Athletics, she oversaw the transition from East Texas State University to Texas A&M University-Commerce as well as renovation projects to revitalize the Field House and the track. Under her direction, football, men’s golf and men’s basketball claimed Lone Star Conference Championships and the men’s basketball team made its first appearance in the NCAA Elite.
She was a member of the NCAA’s Women’s Committee on Committees, the Division II Restructuring Committee, the NCAA Management Team, the chair of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee and on the Executive Board of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
Dr. Harbison was inducted into the Lion Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.
