Greenville High School
geometry students recently caught a glimpse into how their math skills could
lead to a lucrative engineering career. L3 software engineers, Taylor Mullen
and Holly Long, described their careers and told students about the top skills
that will pay off for them as they prepare for their college and career
futures.

“Right now, is a
really good time to start exploring,” Long said. “Most people don’t
know what they want to do, but there are some universal skills you can use for
everything.”

These must-haves include:

  • Interview and Communications
    skills
  • How to work as a team
    and work independently as well
  • Problem-solving and time
    management
  • Self-paced teaching and
    learning
  • A well-grounded command
of the English language and Math
  • The need to write skillfully
    with emphasis on technical writing
  • Skillful presentation of
    data and other information

“Even if you’re not
going into the engineering world, it’s important to keep up with technology and
research. You’ll want to follow companies and universities and what they’re
working on,” Mullen said. “Also, listen to your teachers!”
