Gladys Owens

Gladys Louise Owens, age 97, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 20, 2015 at Briarcliff Health Center.

Gladys was born to Alfred Pat Koger and Bammie Winters Koger on October 19, 1917 in Caddo Mills, Texas. She attended Caddo Mills Schools. On November 27, 1940, she married J Frank Strawn who preceded her in death March 4, 1957. On February 2, 1964, she married James Cecil Owens who also preceded her in death May 30, 1985.

Gladys loved to cook and worked in the cafeterias of Crockett and Austin Elementary Schools here in Greenville for 19 years until her retirement in 1980.  Gladys was a faithful member of Hillside church of Christ.  She is survived by her children Buddy and Judy Strawn of Arlington, Texas, Sharon and Ken Hale of Greenville, Texas, and daughter-in-law Beverly Strawn of Garland, Texas.  Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, Karen Sero, Ronny Fairless, Gary Strawn, Hoby Strawn, Bruce Strawn, Rick Strawn, Tony Strawn, Kim Crumpton, Will Strawn, Gary Hale, Aimy Rhyne, and Brad Strawn. Numerous great-grandchildren also survive.  In addition, she is survived by sisters Dorothy Thompson of Mesquite, Texas, Joe Ann Tate of Stephenville, Texas, and a host of nieces and nephews.  Gladys was preceded in death by her father in 1967 and her mother in 1980. Also preceding her in death were two sons, James and Michael Strawn, one daughter, Marie Fairless, one infant brother, Lloyd Koger, two other brothers, Harlis and Bud Koger, and three sisters, Opal Gavin, Rogene Coleman, and Faye Copeland.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 10:00 AM in the chapel at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home with Brady Cook, minister, officiating. Visitation will also be held at Coker-Mathews Friday, August 21, 2015, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Kody Crumpton, Will Strawn, Jason Rhyne, Gary Hale, Brad Strawn, Kolton Crumpton, and Kyle Crumpton.

The family requests bright colors be worn to the funeral service.
